Week in review October 23-29

For a while I've been wanting to do a week in review for our school. Since this was kind of a spur-of-the moment decision to do for this week, it won't be very picture heavy. But I promise more pictures for next week!









Emma Cate and Dalton are doing MFW-K and did Unit 5-Nest this week. They reviewed all the other sounds they have learned (S, M, L, and A) and learned the sound that N makes. They also studied animal homes, read some books about nests and an entry in the encyclopedia, made birds nests out of chow main noodles, peanut butter, and chocolate chips, and made a nest page to go in their books. They also did the N page out of the Cuisenaire Rods Alphabet Book, which just happened to have a nest on it!

Caroline worked on Bigger Hearts for His Glory Unit 23 and learned about Horace Greeley and also the childhoods of several famous American authors, including Bryant, Hawthorne, and Prescott. In Grammar she finished up learning about verbs. In Math she did a review of multiplication and division. For story-time we're still reading a Non-Fiction book about life in Colonial Times. In the Science in bigger we learned about raising sheep for wool, which was really neat becase Caroline already knows how to hand-spin using a drop spindle. That was pretty fun for her to read about.

In addition to the scienece included in Bigger, we also add Zoology 1 from Apologia. Since it's an "extra" that we do just for fun, it takes us a while to get through a chapter! We're also lapbooking through the book, so I'll put a picture of her lapbook on here next week. It's really coming along! She's studying birds right now, which brings us to a really special thing that ended up happening this week!

We were going to go on a field trip with our homeschool group Friday, but it was cancelled due to the weather. But... a group in town ended up having a Migratory Bird, Bat, and Butterfly festival that we got to go to. It was perfect because the kids have all studied birds in one way or another this week. The festival was so fun! The kids made puppets, masks, and bird feeders.

They learned about what birds need for survival: food, water, shelter, and space by playing a game of minature golf.

They even participated in this great game where they pretended to be a migratory bird and experienced first hand everything a bird goes through on its migration. Here, the "birds" were banded by researchers and then released back into the wild. (Can you see the bands on their ankles?) 

The first time we did it, the "birds" were killed after joining with a sick flock of birds. Dalton died a very drammatic death.



We also got to talk to some people from a local animal rescue center. We had a great time and the kids really learned a lot about birds!
